There is one remaining commercial wharf at Littlehampton. Stone is imported for processing in the asphalt plant north of the wharf and there are occasional exports of sand.
The import of sea-won aggregates ceased in 2004 and average annual tonnages decreased to around 70,000 tonnes per year (approximately 60 ship visits). Ship visits dropped to 22 and 21 in 2009 and 2010 respectively, and imports of about 20,000 tonnes per year.
Factors contributing to recent trends include the decline in availability of smaller ships able to access the harbour. Access to the harbour is limited by tidal conditions.
