The harbour's importance to the regeneration of Littlehampton was recognised by the Littlehampton Vision document published by Arun District Council in 2004. This document identified opportunities for development on the east and west banks of Littlehampton as well as in the town itself.
In summer 2007, the Littlehampton Harbour Board resolved to pursue a leisure based future for the Harbour. The harbour has one remaining commercial shipping wharf. Recent years have seen declining cargoes and revenue, and the decision to expand the Harbour’s leisure activities reflect in part some of these commercial realities.
Following this decision, West Sussex County Council and Arun District Council together with the Harbour Board appointed a Harbour Project Co-ordinator to take this work forward in partnership with Littlehampton Town Council.
